The increased use frozen semen has brought about changes within several breed registries. The most notable changes have taken place within the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), American Paint Horse Association (APHA) and the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC). The changes effect the registration of foals produced after a stallion dies, if he is gelded or sold, and what the registries require at the time of breeding.
Each registry also allows the use of the frozen semen after a stallion is gelded. These changes have provided many opportunities for stallion owners to preserve their stallion's genetics for future generations.
For example, a Semen Rights Permit must be purchased from the AQHA prior to the sale or gelding of a stallion. Each permit allows the previous owner to register one foal. The APHA limits the use of the frozen semen to the current, recorded owner.
The APHA also requires the stallion owner apply for a Frozen Semen Permit on an annual basis. The permit is effective for one calendar year (January 1 - December 31). An annual permit is not required by the AQHA or ApHC.
With rule changes taking place in the past few years it's recommended stallion owners check their rule books for the most current information on the registration requirements when breeding with frozen semen.
