A question we are often asked is how long is frozen semen viable? Although no one knows exactly how long semen can be stored and still retain fertility,
SBS has produced numerous foals from semen stored for more than 20 years. Proper storage is critical if spermatozoa are to maintain viability.
SBS affiliates store semen in special cryogenic liquid nitrogen containers which maintain semen and embryos at -196° C. Semen that has been qualified for export is stored in separate tanks from that destined for domestic distribution.
Each tank is physically inspected once a week to ensure the liquid nitrogen is at the proper level and more nitrogen is added if needed. Written logs are maintained on each tank detailing nitrogen levels, fill dates, and scheduled upkeep. Large volume liquid nitrogen containers are available at all times to fill the storage tanks.
Each ejaculate is stored separately in its own clearly marked goblet. Under no circumstances are straws from one stallion stored with straws from another.
